It’s one of the most frustrating feelings in the world. You pull your lawnmower out of your garage, fill it with gas, get ready to mow your lawn and…the mower won’t start! You pull the cord over and over again, but it still won’t fire up. Before you know it, your arm is tired from trying to start it, your brain is fried from trying to think of what might be wrong and you shove the mower back into your garage and accept defeat.
Before you get too frustrated, though, you should consider a few simple solutions to your problem. Here are some troubleshooting tips that might get your mower up and running again.
Make sure you’re using fresh gas.
You may have put gas in your lawnmower before you tried to start it, but was that gas fresh? If you attempt to use old gas in a lawnmower, it can cause problems in your carburetor. Gas only has a shelf life of a few months. After that, it can cause corrosion in your carburetor and clog it up. So consider the age of your gas if your mower isn’t starting for you.
Check to see if your spark plug is clean and connected.
If you recently had maintenance done on your lawnmower, the spark plug may have been unplugged at some point, and the mower isn’t going to start without it. Spark plugs also won’t work properly if they are old, dirty or damaged, so if you suspect an issue with it, try installing a new spark plug. Spark plugs aren’t terribly expensive, but they do play a vital role in your mower’s operation.
Clean out your air filter.
The carburetor in your mower needs access to air in order to run. A dirty air filter can prevent air from getting into your carburetor, thereby preventing the engine from achieving combustion. If your mower won’t start up, take the air filter out and inspect it. You may need to either clean it or replace it altogether to get your mower going again.
