Have a stubborn tree stump stuck in your yard that you’re not sure how to get rid of? A stump grinder is the right tool for the job. If you’ve never used one of these tools in the past, however, you may need a little help getting started. Today we’ll address a few of the most important things to keep in mind when operating a stump grinder. Getting rid of stumps before the weather turns is a good idea, so you don’t have to worry about them for the next summer.
Trim the Stump
Stump grinders are most effective when the tree stump has already been trimmed with a chainsaw so that it’s nearly at ground level. Do this first before you finish the job with a stump grinder.
Clear the Area
Before you begin, clear the area around the stump of any rocks or large debris. Rocks can dull the stump grinder blade or fly out and cause injuries.
Wear Your PPE
Before you start up your stump grinder, make sure you’re wearing the necessary protective gear, including safety glasses, earplugs, gloves and boots.
Safety First
Scan the area to look for nearby people and animals, turn the stump grinder off when it’s not in use and always operate it from the control panel to keep yourself away from the blade.
Use the Right Technique
Never never force your stump grinder into hardwood, which can dull and damage its blade. Instead, let the blade skim across the top of the stump to gradually grind it down.
Look for the Roots
To completely remove the stump, you’ll also need to locate its surface roots, which can run up to several feet away. A stump grinder can effectively remove these roots as well.
