Fall might be many people’s favorite time of the year, but for homeowners the season can be filled with all kinds of tedious chores. From putting away the patio furniture to cleaning out the gutters, most homeowners have long to-do lists to tackle this time of year.
One of the chores at the top of most homeowners’ fall to-do lists is raking fallen leaves.
Getting outside and raking leaves off the lawn is a time-honored tradition in many households, but its appeal can wane quickly if you live in a heavily-wooded area. Rather than spending your weekends raking leaves this fall, why not take a different approach that can save time and improve the health of your lawn?
Instead of raking fallen leaves, many lawn care experts recommend mulching them to replenish your lawn with nutrients.
Remove the bagging attachment from a lawnmower and mow your lawn as you normally would to cut fallen leaves into smaller pieces. As the mulched leaves and grass clippings decompose, they will provide your lawn with a much-needed dose of fertilizer prior to the wintertime. This, in turn, can contribute to healthier grass growth in the spring.
If you choose to mulch fallen leaves this year, just make sure that they don’t completely your lawn so that your grass will still be able to get the sunlight it needs to survive. If you have very large trees in your yard that drop a lot of leaves, for example, you may have to rake some of them away or mulch them more than once to distribute them evenly across your lawn.
