Although chemical drain cleaners will sometimes get the job done, they aren’t particularly good for your plumbing system. Likewise, they shouldn’t be your first choice when you need to clear a clogged sink. Today we’ll look at a few safe, effective ways to unclog a sink without using harsh chemicals.
Try using a plunger first.
A plunger might be a pretty basic plumbing tool, but more often than not it’s all you need to get rid of a pesky clog. Simply place your plunger over top of the drain and plunge it up and down several times as you would with a clogged toilet. This will build up pressure inside the drain, and in most cases it will clear the clog right up. You may have to repeat the process a few times to knock particularly stubborn clogs loose.
Clean out your P-trap if that doesn’t do the trick.
If the plunger method doesn’t work, it may be because something is stuck in the P-trap under your sink. Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to get down under the sink and remove the P-trap to inspect it for signs of a clog. Just be sure you shut off the water first and place a bucket under the trap to catch any water or debris that might fall from the drain.
Snake your plumbing line if you’re still having problems.
If, after all that, you still can’t seem to get rid of your clog, it’s time to bring in a more serious tool. A plumbing snake can be used to find and remove tough clogs lodged deep in a drain pipe. Just unwind the snake to feed it down into your system. Once you feel a clog, rotate the snake until you feel it break through the blockage. After you finish, it’s a good idea to pour 1/2 cup of baking soda along with 1/2 cup of white vinegar down the drain to break down remnants of the clog and leave your sink smelling fresh and clean.
